Angel's Closet
I had the exciting opportunity to complete my community internship at the Angel's Closet ministry in Roanoke Rapids.
Angel's Closet, led by Director Gilbert Portela and started to help needy students in RRGSD, began literally in a closet at Belmont Elementary School, moved to the abandoned Medlin Elementary School, then to a rented location on Roanoke Avenue and First Street, and finally to its permanent location at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Highway 158. As the building expanded, the ministry was able to help more and more families - with a special focus on children. As no one connected to the ministry receives a paycheck, all donations go directly to the needy or overhead (utilities) expenses. Mr. Portela credits the success of the ministry to community involvement and God's blessing.
This ministry serves needy families and fire victims in multiple counties in North Carolina and Southside Virginia by providing them clothing, shoes, food, toys, kitchen items, linens, furniture, appliances, school supplies, and Christmas gifts three times. Over 2,000 families are helped each year.
During my internship, I built strong relationships with the community and especially the volunteers and families and worked in each area of the ministry including serving in Mr. Portela's place while he underwent surgery. My community internship was a fulfilling experience, and I will volunteer there in the future.
